Structural Movement

listed building survey and building conservation advice

Structural movement is the first of the three main problems facing old buildings. We assess the nature and extent of the structural movement and provide advice on repairs. When necessary, we also recommend a structural engineer with conservation experience in historic buildings.

Dampness

We recommend an effective conservation approach. Modern chemical and other damp treatment will not stop dampness; but will cause harm to historic buildings. Sixty years of expensive modern damp treatment failed to stop the dampness in this Grade II* listed building in Kent. The owner then followed our conservation advice and the building was dry when we revisited a few months later.

Timber Defects

building conservation advice

We recommend an effective conservation approach. Modern timber treatments use water based chemicals, but these are unlikely to be effective and may harm the building. Timber decay and infestation need moisture; so preventing water ingress and removing dampness reduces the risk of timber defects.
